This is a practical, hands-on activity to help kids get a glimpse on how people live during the Stone Age. Kids would re-enact life during the Stone Age era and try to build and design their own shelter. Do they have skills to survive in Stone Age?

Where did humans live during the stone age?

People in the Stone Age were nomads, meaning that they did not live in one place. They constantly moved around to search for food. They use rocks and caves to shelter and to keep them protected from wild animals for a while. When there were no caves to live in, they have to make their own shelters, which needed to be waterproof and windproof. They would use leaves, branches and animal skins to make their shelter.

This video from Youtube by UCD Research provides more perspective on how the early houses were made.

Building Shelter Activity

1. Kids need to construct a Stone Age shelter using materials from around the garden.
2. Kids need to think about what they need to keep their shelter comfortable overnight, how will they make it warm and protected from rain, wind, snow or animals, what materials will they need, how will they make their shelter stand up, how will they attach the materials and how much space they need.
3. If you do not have a garden, you could use items from around your house like blankets or empty boxes.
4. Let the construction begin!

Review

1. Allow kids to tell how they have built their shelter and why.
2. What worked well?
3. What could they do to improve their shelter.
